About Margate City, New Jersey

Margate City is a city of 5,317 people in Atlantic County, on Absecon Island between Ventnor City and Longport. It began as the borough of South Atlantic City, made from parts of Egg Harbor Township after voters approved the idea in a referendum on August 1, 1885. The New Jersey Legislature created the borough on September 7 of that year, and it became a city on April 23, 1897.

On April 20, 1909, the city was reincorporated under a new name, Margate City, after Margate in Kent, England. In 1911 it adopted the Walsh Act commission form of government, and it still runs that way: voters elect three commissioners, and the three pick the mayor from among themselves.

  • Lucy the ElephantLucy is a wooden elephant covered in metal that stands 65 feet tall. She is called America's oldest surviving roadside attraction and the oldest zoomorphic building left in the country, and she was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1976. Work on her outer skin, paid for with government money and donations, cost about $2.4 million and was finished in December 2022. About 130,000 people visit her each year.
  • A boardwalk from 1906 to 1962Margate built its boardwalk in 1906. It stood nearer the ocean than the Atlantic City Boardwalk, so storms struck it harder. The Great Atlantic hurricane of 1944 tore away large sections, and the pieces that were left survived until the Ash Wednesday Storm of 1962.
  • A shore town without hotelsMargate fills up every summer, but unlike Cape May or Ocean City it has no hotels, and weekly rentals are almost unheard of. Many houses are summer homes, so most of the people who spend the season here are regulars.
