About Baring, Washington
The settlement was first called Salmon, and by 1909 it was known as Baring. Like other Skykomish River valley towns, it grew up with the Great Northern Railway. The first train came through in June 1893. A flat, straight stretch of highway here is nicknamed the Baring Straight, a pun on the Bering Strait.
