About Startup, Washington
F. M. Sparling homesteaded the site in the 1880s. William Wait bought his land and filed a plat for the town of Wallace in 1890. Mail kept going by mistake to Wallace, Idaho. So in 1901 the town was renamed for George G. Startup, who managed the Wallace Lumber Company.
In 1898, G. G. Startup and three partners opened a sawmill at Wallace, as the town was then called. It was the county's most important new mill that year. The mill ran with success until fire destroyed it in 1916. The firm then bought the Sultan River Lumber Company plant, and Startup stayed on as manager and treasurer.
