About Bay Center, Washington
Mattie Goodpasture suggested the name Bay Center. She later became Mrs. Mattie Rhoades. She chose it because the village sat near the middle of the landward side of Willapa Harbor. At first the name was spelled Bay Centre.
By 1912, Bay Center was an important oyster growing and fishing town on an arm of Willapa Harbor. Growers raised both native and eastern oysters there in large quantities. Logging and farming country surrounded the town.
