About Bay, Michigan
Bay is a township of 1,142 people in Charlevoix County, northeast of Grand Traverse Bay. Travel here depended on the water, and that shaped the township's early history. The first Europeans to arrive were French voyagers, fur trappers and Jesuit missionaries.
Lumber brought the next wave of settlers. In 1876 the village of Horton Bay was founded as a lumbering community and named for Samuel Horton, a pioneer settler. Its old general store is still standing today.
- A lumber village from 1876Horton Bay started out with what a logging settlement required: a sawmill, a boarding house, a company store and a smithy, along with shanty boys to fell the timber and draft horses to haul it. The general store still stands, along with many other early buildings in the village, and the Horton Bay General Store was added to the National Register in 1991.
- Valued at $137,355 in 1911The county's 1911 assessment counted 10,064 acres in Bay Township. Its real property was valued at $125,665 and its personal property at $11,690, for a total of $137,355.
