About Bay Minette, Alabama

Bay Minette is a city of 8,107 people and the county seat of Baldwin County, 35 miles northeast of Mobile. It takes its name from nearby Minette Bay, which honors a French surveyor named Minet. Settlement began in 1861, when the Louisville and Nashville tracks arrived and made the place a junction, and newcomers came for the forests around it and for its nearness to the Tensaw River Delta and the Gulf.

Baldwin County was created on December 21, 1809, and its seat moved from McIntosh Bluff to Blakeley in 1810 and later to Daphne. In 1901 the legislature named Bay Minette the seat, and town leaders dedicated a courthouse on October 1, 1901, but Daphne would not give up the county's government. So Bay Minette men made up a story about a murder to draw the sheriff and his deputy out of Daphne. While the lawmen hunted a killer who didn't exist, a group traveled the 30 miles to Daphne, took the county records and brought them to the new courthouse, and the seat has stayed in Bay Minette ever since. The town was incorporated in 1907.

  • The raid, painted in 1937When Bay Minette got a new post office in 1937, the WPA commissioned the painter Hilton Leech to make a mural for it. His subject was the night the town's men carried the county records away from Daphne, which Wikipedia dates to October 11 and 12, 1901.
  • Ten turpentine plantsBay Minette had 250 people in 1888 and 749 by 1910. Its biggest businesses then were 10 turpentine and rosin plants, along with 2 sawmills, gristmills, a crate factory and a fertilizer plant. In 1915 the town put in its own electric plant for $10,000 and waterworks for $20,000, topped by a tank holding 80,000 gallons. The Baldwin Times, a weekly paper founded in 1890, was printed here.
  • The Foley Branch in 1905In 1905 crews built a branch of the L&N, the Bay Minette and Fort Morgan Railroad, through thick pine woods from Bay Minette south to Foley. Known later as the Foley Branch, it hauled much of the county's timber, and by 1924 the town handled freight tonnage close to that of Montgomery and Mobile. The L&N later became part of CSX Transportation, which still moves freight and employs people here.
  • Close Encounters at the depotPart of Close Encounters of the Third Kind was shot beside Bay Minette's old L&N Railroad depot. Years later, film crews returned to the Baldwin County countryside near town to shoot Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood.
