About Bay Pines, Florida

Bay Pines is a community of 3,106 people in Pinellas County, and it grew up around a home and hospital for veterans. Veterans and civic leaders in St. Petersburg formed a permanent committee and ran a statewide campaign to bring a new branch of the national veterans home system to Florida. President Hoover approved a site at Seminole Point on May 26, 1931, and the first few buildings were finished on January 13, 1933.

The home and hospital opened two months later, on March 16, 1933, with 90 staff members and 17 patients. On June 15, 1934, Seminole Point was officially renamed Bay Pines. The buildings, the post office and even the railroad timetables switched over to the new name.

  • A cemetery from 1933Bay Pines Cemetery was dedicated and opened on March 15, 1933, one day before the home itself opened. It was set aside as a resting place for veterans who died in the Bay Pines hospital and homes, and the first burial followed on April 25, 1933.
  • Mediterranean Revival wardsThe veterans campus at 10000 Bay Pines Blvd. keeps 14 of its hospital buildings in the Mediterranean Revival style, built from the 1930s on, and the same ground holds prehistoric aboriginal sites. The old home and hospital grounds were listed on the National Register as a historic district on June 27, 2012.
