About Treasure Island, Florida

Treasure Island is a city of 6,584 people in Pinellas County, set on a low barrier island facing the Gulf of Mexico. The Tocobaga lived here in small communities as early as about 300 CE, and Native people traded along this coast until PΓ‘nfilo de NarvΓ‘ez arrived in 1528. His expedition devastated the people living here, then moved on in search of gold.

The island's name came from a stunt. Around 1915, owners trying to sell lots on the island buried a pair of wooden chests in the sand, then staged their discovery and claimed the chests were full of treasure. Word of the find spread quickly, and people started calling the place Treasure Island.

  • John's Pass in 1848The island rises only three feet. The Great Gale of 1848 cut John's Pass through its north end and broke off two smaller islands, now known as the Isle of Palms and the Isle of Capri.
  • New land from dredged fillAfter World War II and through the 1950s, builders put up homes and hotels at a fast pace. Much of the ground they built on was fill dredged from the water, and the man-made extensions were laid out so owners could reach navigable water such as Boca Ciega Bay. Today water covers 3.7 of the city's 5.3 square miles.
  • A library shared by five townsNo single beach town could keep a library going alone, so Treasure Island pools its money with Madeira Beach, Redington Beach, North Redington Beach and Redington Shores to run the Gulf Beaches Public Library in Madeira Beach.
