About St. Pete Beach, Florida

St. Pete Beach is a city of 8,879 people in Pinellas County, and it covers all of Long Key, a barrier island in the Gulf of Mexico. It began as four separate places, Pass-a-Grille, St. Petersburg Beach, Belle Vista and Don CeSar Place, and a 1957 vote to merge them passed by just five votes.

The new city carried the name St. Petersburg Beach for almost four decades. On March 9, 1994, voters chose the shorter name St. Pete Beach to tell it apart from the city of St. Petersburg, which lies a few miles to the east. Bridges, three in all, connect the island with the Bayway Isles of St. Petersburg, South Pasadena and Treasure Island.

  • Pass-a-Grille, seen in 1528By 1857 John Gomez welcomed travelers from St. Petersburg and Tampa to his beach place, and in 1901 French travel agent George Henri Lizotte opened the Bonhomie, its first hotel.
  • The pink castle of 1928Thomas Rowe paid $100,000 for 80 acres in 1924 to build a pink castle on the Gulf. The plans doubled from 110 rooms to 220. Rowe named it for the hero of the opera Maritana, Don CΓ©sar de BazΓ‘n. It opened on January 16, 1928, and wealthy Jazz Age guests filled it.
  • Hospital, office, hotel againThe Army bought the Don CeSar during World War II and ran it as a military hospital, then as a convalescent center. The Veterans Administration kept offices there until 1967. When the government planned to tear down the empty building, local residents fought back, and the Don CeSar took in hotel guests once more starting November 23, 1973. In 1975 the hotel was added to the National Register.
  • 450 books on two shelvesThe St. Petersburg Beach Community Club started a library in its own clubhouse in 1951, beginning with 450 books on two shelves. The city took it over when it incorporated in 1957. In 1968 the Friends of the library raised more than $26,000, and on July 7, 1969, a new building by architect Glenn Q. Johnson opened at 365 73rd Avenue. After a $2.6 million renovation, the library reopened on March 26, 2021.
  • The fish broil schoolSunshine Elementary opened in Pass-a-Grille in 1915. Gulf Beaches Elementary followed in 1950 and soon drew most of Sunshine's pupils, and when Sunshine closed on June 6, 1975, Gulf Beaches carried on its traditions, among them the fish broil fundraiser. Facing budget cuts, the school board voted 7 to 0 on January 14, 2009, to close Gulf Beaches, but in 2014 it announced the school would reopen for the 2014 to 2015 year as a technology magnet.
