About Tierra Verde, Florida
Tierra Verde is a community of 3,836 people in Pinellas County, on an island near the mouth of Tampa Bay. It began as a scatter of small keys grown over with mangroves and pines. In the mid-1950s Dr. Bradley "Doc" Waldron talked the State of Florida into selling him Pine, Cabbage and Pardee keys and the bay bottom around them. His partners, the Detroit builders Hyman and Irving Green, called the project Green Land. A dredging permit arrived in December 1960, and the islands and permits then went to New York contractor Louis Berlanti and his son Fred. Many people believed Berlanti was fronting for Texas oilman Clint Murchison Sr.
At first a ferry from Pass-a-Grille was the only way in, but a road and bridge reached the island by December 1962. On August 16, 1963, the Berlantis died when the sabotaged plane Louis was flying exploded over Lake Okeechobee. The Murchisons then held the project for more than 14 years, and lots sold slowly. That changed in 1984, when a new ramp linked the Pinellas Bayway to Interstate 275 and sales climbed. In January 1985 Deltona handed the community over to its homeowners.
- A burial mound from 1500Around the year 1500, people from a nearby Safety Harbor culture village raised a large burial mound on Cabbage Key and used it for some years. State agencies dug into the Tierra Verde Mound in 1961, and a state marker has stood at the site since 1962.
- Guy Lombardo's Port O' CallBandleader Guy Lombardo lent his name to the new island, and his Port O' Call Resort opened in January 1963. Frank Sinatra, Marlene Dietrich, Liberace and Mel Tormé later performed there, and the TV series Route 66 filmed on the island. His band promoted Tierra Verde at every stop of a 10-week bus tour of more than 20 cities. After the Berlantis died, Lombardo stayed one season more, couldn't strike a new deal with the Murchisons and never returned.
- Silas Dent's dairySilas Dent and his brother ran a dairy farm on Cabbage Key, the largest of the old islands. By 1920 the key had a dairy of 36 cows and the first wireless tower in Pinellas County. Dent kept living on Cabbage Key until his death there in 1952.
- Fort De Soto next doorRobert E. Lee, a lieutenant colonel at the time, recommended in 1848 that Mullet Key serve as a defense post for Florida's coast. Fort De Soto was built there during the Spanish-American War of 1898, and in 1948 the federal government sold the key to Pinellas County. Today it is Fort De Soto Park, at the southern end of Tierra Verde.
- Unincorporated by choiceTierra Verde covers 667 acres of unincorporated county land. St. Petersburg and St. Pete Beach have both tried to annex it, but residents voted to stay on their own. Its property was valued at $15 million in 1980 and at $632 million in 2003.
