About Bayport, Florida

Bayport began in the early 1850s as a port for supplies and cotton. It stood at the mouth of the Weeki Wachee River. The village was briefly the county seat, until Brooksville took that role in 1856. After the Civil War, Bayport became Hernando County's main outlet for lumber and farm goods.

During the Civil War, Union ships blockaded Florida's coast. Small rivers like the Weeki Wachee became important trade routes. Union ships caught eleven blockade runners near Bayport between 1862 and 1865. The spot where Confederates placed a cannon battery is still visible on a wooded point by the fishing pier.
