About Bayview, Humboldt County, California
Bayview is a community of 2,619 people in Humboldt County, on the edge of the city of Eureka. Its population grew from 2,510 in the 2010 census, and many locals think of the area as part of Pine Hill.
That name comes from the Pine family's dairy. Safford Pine arrived in the county in 1874 and kept up his milk business on a farm of 340 acres, which people came to call the Pine Hill Ranch. He sold out in 1914, and the farmland slowly filled with houses. By 1951 the old ranch had turned into a neighborhood of many homes, with the Pine family house still standing among them.
“The home of S.F. Pine of Pine Hill was the scene of large gatherings in the old days. They were splendid hosts.”
- Doug Pine, farm advisorSafford Pine's son Doug was born in 1884 and grew up in the family home on Pine Hill, staying there until his father sold the ranch in 1914. He went on to become a farm advisor, and in 1951 the Humboldt Times gave a whole page to the story of his life.
- A post office, 1925 to 1935Bayview, sometimes spelled Bay View, had a post office of its own for ten years, from 1925 until it closed in 1935.
