About Beacon, New York

Beacon is a city of 13,769 people in Dutchess County, on the east bank of the Hudson River. In 1683 Francis Rombout and Gulian Verplanck, fur traders from New York City, bought this land from the Wappinger, and James II approved the purchase in 1685 as the Rombout Patent. When the patent was divided in 1706, Rombout's daughter, Catheryna Brett, kept about 28,000 acres along the Vis Kill.

Two villages grew up on that land. In 1748 Brett joined other settlers in a plan for the Frankfort Store House beside the water. That storehouse started river freighting, and by 1780 Fishkill Landing was a port with two dozen vessels. Matteawan, a mile and a half east on Fishkill Creek, used the creek's water power to become a factory town. Fishkill Landing was incorporated in 1864, and in 1913 the two villages and a small part of Glenham joined to form the city of Beacon, named for the Revolutionary War signal fires on Mount Beacon.

  • Madam Brett's millsWhen Catheryna Brett sold parts of her land to settlers, she often kept the right to build a flour mill there. Dutchess County led New York in wheat during the first third of the 1800s, and the mills on her land drew farmers from both sides of the Hudson. Her homestead at 50 Van Nydeck Avenue, the oldest building anywhere in the county, is listed on the National Register.
  • The Hat Making CapitalIn the 1800s Beacon earned the nickname "The Hat Making Capital of the US," and close to 50 hat factories ran here at the same time. Hats were first made in the area by the Matteawan Manufacturing Company, which employed 500 workers. Dutchess Hat Works, which followed, turned out 450 dozen hats a day by 1900 and kept its own showroom in Manhattan.
  • Dia Beacon in 2003The economy slumped in the 1970s, most of Beacon's factories shut, and the Dutchess Ski area closed in 1975. Until the late 1990s almost 80 percent of the city's factories and commercial spaces stood empty. Recovery began in the late 1990s, and in 2003 Dia Beacon opened its modern art collection in a former Nabisco box-printing factory, helping bring artists, shops and restaurants back to Main Street.
  • A library by Richard Morris HuntIn 1872 Joseph and Eliza Howland joined a committee of ten local benefactors to start a library, and they hired Hunt, Eliza's brother-in-law, to design it. Its 2,200 books were at first open only to subscribers, but later anyone could use them. The collection outgrew the building and moved down Main Street by 1976. The old building, on the National Register since May 5, 1973, is now the Howland Cultural Center.
  • The dummy light since 1926Since 1926 a traffic signal on a pedestal has stood in the middle of the crossing where Main Street meets East Main Street. It is one of only a handful of working dummy lights left in the United States, and the city restored it in 2022.
