About the Village of Fishkill, New York

At the time of the Revolution, the village had only a dozen or so houses, two churches, a tavern and a school. Early in the war, the Colonials fortified Wiccopee Pass to block a British advance by land. Barracks and storehouses rose here, and refugees from New York City crowded into the few houses.

Printer Samuel Loudon fled New York City when the British occupied it during the Revolution. He set up a post office in Fishkill, the first in New York state. He also kept printing his revolutionary newspaper, The New York Packet, here.

  • Wartime churches and a spyDuring the Revolutionary War, Trinity Church served as a hospital. The Dutch Reformed church became a military prison. American spy Enoch Crosby was briefly held there with Loyalist recruits. He was then allowed to escape.
