About Brinckerhoff, New York

Brinckerhoff is a hamlet of 3,377 people in Dutchess County. Most of it sits in the far northeast of Fishkill township, and a small part reaches north into the town of Wappinger. The Brinckerhoff family made the first settlement here and gave the place its name, which the 1882 county history wrote as Brinckerhoffville.

Abraham Brinckerhoff ran a large farm here, and through the years of the Revolution he also worked as the local merchant and miller. After the war he represented Dutchess County as a member of the Assembly in 1784-85.

  • The Star MillsDuring the Revolution, fire destroyed Abraham Brinckerhoff's mill and everything inside it. People believed soldiers had started the blaze by accident, and the soldiers rebuilt the mill right away. That second mill was still standing in 1882, when it was known as the Star Mills, and it stayed busy grinding grain for nearby farmers, just as the first one had a century before. Star Mill Road still carries its name.
  • The county's first PresbyteriansJacob Terbos gave an acre of land for a church, and its frame was raised over two days, September 17 and 18, 1747. It was the first Presbyterian church in Dutchess County. The building stood for more than a century until fire destroyed it on March 1, 1866, and the congregation never rebuilt it.
