About New Hamburg, New York
In February 1871, a northbound train struck an oil tank car on the drawbridge over Wappinger Creek at New Hamburg. Both trains exploded and hurled people and luggage into the water. Twenty-two deaths were confirmed. Many bodies were never recovered.
Construction of the Hudson River Railroad began here in 1848. Soon cholera spread among the workers. Father J. Scollon of St. Mary's in Channingville tended the sick and dying without rest. The outbreak killed several workers and delayed the work.
