About Marlborough, New York

Marlborough is a town of 8,712 people in the southeastern corner of Ulster County, on the west bank of the Hudson River, and it takes its name from the Duke of Marlborough. In 1694 the Crown granted a patent for this land to Captain John Evans of the Royal Navy, and one of the first settlers on his grant arrived in 1697.

  • Its own town in 1788The land first belonged to the Newburgh Precinct and was set apart from it in 1772. Marlborough was formed as a town in 1788, during a stretch of years when many Ulster County towns were organized. In 1800 part of its territory was taken to create the new town of Plattekill, on its western side.
  • Between river and ridgeThe Hudson River forms Marlborough's eastern line, with Dutchess County on the far shore, and the river's edge at sea level is the lowest ground in town. The western line runs close to the Marlboro Mountain ridge, which divides Marlborough from Plattekill. Its summit, at 1,127 feet, is the town's highest point.
  • Lattingtown Baptist ChurchThe Lattingtown Baptist Church stands in Lattintown, a hamlet on Route 11 on the town's west side. The church joined the National Register of Historic Places in 2010.
