About Spackenkill, New York
Spackenkill is a hamlet of 4,223 people in the town of Poughkeepsie, in Dutchess County, about 4 miles south of the city of Poughkeepsie. Its name comes from a stream that Dutch mapmakers marked as Speck zyn kill, or Spot's brook. They named it for Waspacheek, a Native leader also called Spek, who held real standing around the Wappings Kill.
Waspacheek was a friend of Arnout Viele, an interpreter whom Native people trusted because he dealt with them honestly. On June 15, 1680, Waspacheek joined Calkoen, the Esopus sachem, and Pillippuwas of the Wappingers in giving Viele roughly twenty thousand acres as a reward. That land ran north to the Rust Plaets spring, now in the Rural Cemetery, and covered all of what became the Town of Poughkeepsie.
- Trains to Camelot until 1952For years, New York Central local trains running between New York City and Poughkeepsie stopped at Camelot station, 5.3 miles south of the Poughkeepsie depot. The stop stood west of today's IBM Road, southwest of the present IBM campus. The local service ended in 1952, and riders now catch Amtrak and Metro North trains at Poughkeepsie to the north or New Hamburg to the south.
- A neighborhood of IBM workersAn IBM plant stands in Spackenkill, and many people who work there live in the hamlet. Their homes are spread across informal neighborhoods that each go by a name, among them Kingwood Park, Crown Heights, Beechwood, King George, Nassau and Hagantown.
- A school district of its ownMost of the hamlet's children who go to public school attend the Spackenkill Union Free School District, and several of its schools sit inside the hamlet's neighborhoods. The district's one comprehensive high school is Spackenkill High School. A smaller part of the hamlet belongs to the Wappingers Central School District.
