About Red Oaks Mill, New York
Red Oaks Mill is a hamlet of 3,810 people in Dutchess County, just southeast of the city of Poughkeepsie. Wappinger Creek, which feeds the Hudson River, runs through the middle of the hamlet and serves as the line between the towns of Poughkeepsie and LaGrange, so Red Oaks Mill lies partly in each. An old dam on the creek marked the place where a grist mill had once stood, and by 1937 the mill itself was long gone.
- A swimming spot by the damA Federal Writers' Project guide to Dutchess County, published in 1937, described the old dam on Wappinger Creek, the site of the vanished grist mill, with a concrete bridge crossing the creek nearby. Just south of the dam, the place then spelled Red Oak Mills drew people who came to picnic and swim.
- Bungalows for Poughkeepsie workersThe same 1937 guide noted that many bungalows had gone up lately on the land between Red Oak Mills and New Hackensack. The families living in them worked in Poughkeepsie, and Red Oaks Mill is now counted as a suburb of that city.
