About Beaufort, South Carolina

Beaufort is a city of 13,607 people and the seat of Beaufort County. It sits on Port Royal Island, at the center of the Sea Islands. The Spanish captain Pedro de Salazar explored this coast between 1514 and 1516, and several European attempts at a colony failed here before the British founded Beaufort in 1711. It took its name from Henry Somerset, the 2nd Duke of Beaufort, and only Charleston is an older city in South Carolina.

Raids by Native American tribes and the threat of Spain to the south kept the young town small. It prospered first by building ships, and later as the home of the Lowcountry's wealthy planters, whose fortunes rested on slavery. Union troops took Beaufort months into the Civil War, after the Battle of Port Royal, and people escaping slavery came to the town. The Union declared them free and began teaching them, and the Freedmen's Bureau worked with Black residents through Reconstruction. The Reconstruction Era National Monument, created in 2017, remembers that time.

  • Storm of 1893, fire of 1907After the Civil War, Beaufort made its living from phosphate mining. Then a terrible hurricane struck in 1893, and a fire followed in 1907. Together they wrecked much of the town and its economy and held back its growth for close to half a century. New military bases brought the town back, and its population doubled during the 1940s and 1950s as service members and their families arrived.
  • Beaufort College, 1795Beaufort College was founded in 1795. The South Carolina Encyclopedia counts it as the second-oldest college in the state.
  • 304 acres of landmarkMuch of the old English town survives on the peninsula that reaches into the Beaufort River. A total of 304 acres of it is a National Historic Landmark. The old town divides into five neighborhoods: Downtown, The Bluff, the Northwest Quadrant, The Point and The Old Commons.
  • Pat Conroy's townThe novelist Pat Conroy lived in Beaufort for many years and set several of his books here or drew on the town for them. Filmmakers shot The Big Chill, The Great Santini, The Prince of Tides, Forrest Gump and G.I. Jane in the area. Beaufort's Citizens Cemetery is the garden in the title of John Berendt's Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil.
  • Shrimp Festival in OctoberEvery year on the first weekend in October, Beaufort's Shrimp Festival celebrates the shrimping industry that has long worked these waters. In 2007 the Southeast Tourism Society chose it as one of its Top 20 Events.
