About Lobeco, South Carolina
Lobeco is said luh-BEE-co. The name is an acronym made from Long, Bellamy, and Company. The Beaufort County community has stayed mostly agricultural and rural. Its small center holds a library, post office and produce market.
In 1941, Lobeco was an important shipping point for locally grown vegetables. Workers filled its packing sheds during the season. Tomatoes were the only crop that needed outside labor. Growers sowed the plants in hotbeds during December and January. They moved them to open fields by mid-March.
