About Coosawhatchie, South Carolina
Robert E. Lee set up his headquarters here in late 1861 and early 1862. He was building up coastal defenses for South Carolina and Georgia. His men dug huge earthworks to guard the railroad bridge from Union gunboats. Lee also bought his famous horse Traveller here and gave him that name.
The name comes from the Coosaw people and hatchie, their word for river. Trappers settled the spot on the King's Highway in the 1740s. British troops burned much of the town in 1779. Even so, in 1788 it became the seat of Beaufort District.
