About Bee Ridge, Florida
Bee Ridge is a community of 9,955 people in Sarasota County. Its first settlers, Isaac Alderman Redd and his wife Eleanor, came around 1867. Decades later, in 1912, the Sarasota-Venice Land Company of Joseph H. Lord and Honore Palmer, whose mother was the wealthy Chicago widow Mrs. Potter Palmer, laid out a Town of Bee Ridge covering twelve square miles, though it never received a charter. The railroad also reached Bee Ridge that year and continued on to Venice.
- Named by a preacherIsaac Redd was a Baptist preacher. According to the story, nearly every hollow tree around his new home held a beehive, and the land rose in a ridge, so the Reverend Redd put the two together and called the place Bee Ridge.
- Bee Ridge FarmsMrs. Palmer and her sons opened a sawmill at Bee Ridge in 1914. The family also planted most of the area's first citrus groves, along with vegetable and celery farms, and ran them all under the name Bee Ridge Farms.
- A doctor's house in the parkThe historic Dr. C. B. Wilson House now stands in Urfer Family Park. The park is one of several around Bee Ridge, along with the Larry C. Manning Memorial Preserve, and the Ashton Trailhead leads walkers and riders onto the Legacy Trail.
