About Ridge Wood Heights, Florida
Ridge Wood Heights is a census-designated place of 5,064 people in Sarasota County, about 2 miles east of Siesta Key. One of its neighborhoods began in 1916, when a group of people from Maine announced that they would build winter homes and a clubhouse for their community near Phillippi Creek.
The plans were front-page news, and the settlement came to be called the Maine Colony. Early aerial photos show many homes along Ashton Road, its main road, and on the side streets branching off it.
- Railroad men from MaineThe first families of the Maine Colony came largely from one workplace. Many were retired or retiring employees of the Boston and Maine Railroad, who traded northern winters for homes along Phillippi Creek.
- Streets named for homeThe settlers named side streets off Ashton Road for the towns they had left behind, which is why the neighborhood has a Portland Street and a Damariscotta Street.
- A clubhouse built on bean suppersThe colony bought land for its clubhouse from the Palmer family, but World War I pushed the work back to the mid-1920s. Frank X. Jannelle oversaw the building, which used lumber shipped down from Maine, and tradition holds that neighborhood bean suppers paid for it. The wood frame clubhouse filled with potlucks, dances, fish fries and card games, and it is still the social heart of the old Maine Colony.
