About Siesta Key, Florida

Siesta Key is a barrier island of 5,454 people in Sarasota County, with Roberts Bay on one side and the Gulf of Mexico on the other. Until the 20th century hardly anyone lived there, and it went by several names, among them Clam Island, Little Sarasota Key and Sarasota Key. With no bridge to Sarasota, anyone coming or going had to travel by boat.

Harry Higel, E. M. Arbogast and Captain Louis Roberts started the Siesta Land Company in 1907. They laid out lots on the north end under the name Siesta on the Gulf of Mexico, then dug out bayous and put in docks. Higel opened a hotel of his own, Higelhurst, in 1914 and brought his guests over by boat. He kept pressing the Army Corps of Engineers to build a crossing, and in 1917 the first bridge joined the north end of the key to the city.

  • The Roberts' Inn, 1906Captain Louis Roberts and his wife started the Roberts' Inn, which also went by the Siesta Inn, in 1906, taking in northerners who wanted to escape the cold. Many guests came back year after year for Mrs. Roberts' seafood. A year after the inn opened, her husband helped form the Siesta Land Company.
  • Two bridges by 1927A new bridge took the place of the 1917 span in 1927, and that same year a second one opened at Stickney Point, on the south end. With both ends tied to the mainland, the island settled on a single name, and by 1952 all of it was officially Siesta Key.
  • Sand that stays coolIn 1954 Sarasota County made its first purchase of land on the key, for a public beach. The sand at Siesta Beach is 99 percent quartz, most of it washed down by rivers from the Appalachian Mountains, and it reflects so much sunlight that bare feet stay comfortable on the hottest days. Harvard University geologists have judged the sand here and on Crescent Beach to be millions of years old.
  • A conductor's homeFrederick Fennell, the band conductor who was one of the leading promoters of the Eastman Wind Ensemble, made his home on Siesta Key. He died at his house on the island in 2004.
