About Beekmantown, New York

Beekmantown is a town of 5,508 people in Clinton County, just north of Plattsburgh on the shore of Lake Champlain. Settlers first came to this land around 1783, and the town later took its name from William Beekman, one of its original landowners.

For several decades the area belonged to the town of Plattsburgh, until Beekmantown was formed as a separate town in 1820. It gave up part of its land in 1854, when the new town of Dannemora was created out of it.

  • Skirmishes in 1814The War of 1812 reached Beekmantown in 1814, when skirmishes were fought within the town's borders.
  • On the Vermont lineBeekmantown's eastern boundary runs down the middle of Lake Champlain's west channel, so it is also the state line with Vermont. Water covers 9.2 of the town's 69.6 square miles. Point au Roche, a peninsula reaching into the lake, gives its name to a settlement in the northeast of the town and to Point Au Roche State Park on the shore.
