About Belpre, Ohio

Belpre is a city of 6,728 people in Washington County, facing Parkersburg, West Virginia, across the Ohio River. Before any American settlement, French trappers called the valley Belle Prairie, meaning beautiful meadow, and the first settlement here was made in 1788. Settlers from New England came down the river by flatboat, and the farmers living nearby raised Farmers' Castle, a fort made up of thirteen blockhouses near the water.

The Belpre and Cincinnati Railroad was organized by railroad developers in 1845, but in 1851 they shifted its destination to Marietta and gave it a new name. Parkersburg got Baltimore and Ohio service in 1857, and for years travelers had to take a steamboat between Marietta and Parkersburg. From 1868 to 1870 the B&O built the Parkersburg Bridge to Belpre as part of its main route west. Jacob Linville designed it, and at 7,140 feet it was reportedly the longest bridge in the world, drawing trade to the town and carrying Ohio coal to the East Coast.

  • A teacher in 1789In 1789 the families at Farmers' Castle engaged Bathsheba Rouse to give lessons to their youngest children inside the fort. Girls learned reading, writing and sewing, and boys learned reading, writing and arithmetic. According to a state historical marker, no woman had taught school anywhere in the Northwest Territory before her.
  • A mill that floated, 1791Grinding grain by hand was slow, so in 1791 Captain Jonathan Devol built a floating mill from an idea by Griffin Greene. He joined two boats with oak planks and put the millstones in a small house on the deck, where the current turned the wheel. It ground 25 to 50 bushels a day, and settlers along nearly thirty miles of river got their meal there. Its marker stands at 1555 Blennerhassett Avenue.
  • Largest in 1980Belpre grew differently from the industrial cities of eastern Ohio and reached its largest population in 1980. It has lost some people since then as heavy industry declined, but it has held steadier than cities that lost half their residents after peaking in 1940 and 1950. The nearby settlement of Rockland has become part of Belpre.
