About Hockingport, Ohio

Hockingport is a community of 205 people in Troy Township, Athens County, on the point where the Hocking River meets the Ohio. In October 1774, Virginia militiamen under Lord Dunmore built a fort on this point, called Fort Gower, and made it their base camp for Dunmore's War. The soldiers left the fort once that war was over, and its site is now thought to lie underwater just off the point.

Boats carried goods out of the village along the Hocking River, and that trade gave Hockingport its name. A post office opened here under the Hockingport name in 1838 and is still running today, serving ZIP code 45739.

  • The Fort Gower ResolvesIn November 1774 the soldiers camped at Fort Gower issued the Fort Gower Resolves, named for the fort where they gathered. Several officers in the camp later became famous Virginians of the Revolution, among them George Rogers Clark, Daniel Morgan, Simon Kenton, William Crawford and Andrew Lewis.
  • Among the county's oldestWhen the History of Hocking Valley was published in 1883, it described Hockingport, at the mouth of the Hocking on the Ohio River, as one of the oldest settlements in the county.
