About Ben Wheeler, Texas
Kentucky farmer Benjamin F. Wheeler settled this area in the 1840s. The community was first called Clough, for local farmer George W. Clough. In 1878 the post office moved to the present site, and the town took the name Ben Wheeler.
An 1893 fire destroyed most of the businesses in Ben Wheeler. The town rebuilt and had 500 people by 1896. Then smallpox struck, and only 238 residents remained by 1904. Later the East Texas Oil Boom helped carry the town through the Great Depression.
