About Benton, Maine

Benton is a town of 2,715 people in Kennebec County, where the Kennebec and Sebasticook rivers run through the countryside. In 1842 it was split off from the town of Clinton, and its founders named it for Thomas Hart Benton, who represented Missouri in the U.S. Senate. Four villages grew up within the town: East Benton, Benton Station, Benton Falls and Benton itself.

  • Town meetings at the GrangeThe Benton Grange was organized in 1906, and for its first years members gathered in the local school. In 1915 they put up a hall of their own on River Road, at the corner of School Drive, drawn by Fairfield architect Frank M. Gifford. Its large upstairs auditorium made it the home of Benton's annual town meeting from 1915 to 1990. Benton Grange #458 joined the National Register in 2004, and the chapter still meets.
  • Taking command at Fair OaksFrank W. Haskell was born in Benton in 1843 and served as sergeant major of the 3rd Maine Volunteer Infantry. At Fair Oaks, Virginia, in 1862, the regiment's officers were killed or disabled, so Haskell took charge of part of it himself. That act earned him the Medal of Honor.
  • A hometown hero in VietnamBrian L. Buker grew up in Benton and went to Vietnam as a Special Forces sergeant. In 1970 he led his platoon in an attack on two fortified bunkers and destroyed both, taking the second even after he was badly wounded. He died in that fight at age 20, received the Medal of Honor after his death, and was laid to rest at Brown Cemetery in Benton.
  • The Electric Railway KingAmos F. Gerald, born in Benton, became a railroad builder who laid 125 miles of Maine's early lines. His work on electric railways earned him the nickname "Electric Railway King" across the state.
