About Bergoo, West Virginia
Bergoo is a community of 64 people in Webster County, set where Leatherwood Creek runs into the Elk River. The 2020 census count was down from 94 in 2010. The place was first called Leatherwood, after the creek, and no one is sure where the newer name came from. Some say it honored a local Indian, while others think it was borrowed from burgoo, a kind of stew.
- End of a Western Maryland lineOne line of the Western Maryland Railway started at Cheat Junction in Randolph County and ran all the way to Bergoo, linking this corner of Webster County to the wider rail network.
- A lumber mill moved in 1926In 1926 the Pardee & Curtin Lumber Company moved its mill, its shop and its Shay locomotives from Curtin, in Nicholas County, to Bergoo, bringing the timber business to the town.
- Rimfire Hamrick, woodsmanRimfire Hamrick was born in Bergoo and became known as one of the finest woodsmen of his day. The coal and lumber barons who came to these mountains to hunt counted him as a friend and relied on him as their guide.
