About Berkley, Colorado
Berkley is an unincorporated community of 12,536 people in southwestern Adams County, just north of Denver's Berkeley neighborhood. Around 1945 the Brannan Sand and Gravel Company began digging gravel from a pit here, and by 1954 the company had taken all it could use. Groundwater then filled the empty pit, and the hole left by mining became a lake.
- A gravel pit turned resortAfter water filled the worked-out pit in 1954, Lloyd S. Brannan opened it as a private resort where people could swim and go boating. The lake is known as Lake Sangraco, and its boat complex still stands with it.
- A model of reclaimed landPit #8 of the Brannan Sand and Gravel Company, together with Lake Sangraco and its boat complex, is listed on the National and State Register. History Colorado counts it as an outstanding example of taking ground that mining had used up and putting it to a new use.
- Mail through DenverBerkley has never had a post office of its own. Its homes and businesses get their mail through the Denver post office for ZIP code 80221.
