About Sherrelwood, Colorado
Sherrelwood is an unincorporated community of 19,228 people in Adams County, part of the Denver metro area. It has no city government of its own, so the county governs it, and its children attend the Westminster Public Schools. Two of its neighborhoods are Western Hills, platted by Westward Homes in 1954, and Sherrelwood Estates, whose street names honor the family that owned the land before the houses went up.
- Western Hills, platted in 1954Westward Homes, Inc., with C. B. Shewmake as president, filed the plat for Western Hills in 1954. In April 1955, a Denver Post story said the builders meant to put up 6,000 homes on 1,218 acres. They set aside 60 acres for schools and parks, 55 for a shopping center and 14 for apartments.
- An Avenue of Models in 1955While that plan was announced, the builders told the Rocky Mountain News that buyers could tour an Avenue of Models lined with 21 houses. Westward Homes offered two- and three-bedroom plans, and the homes sold for under $12,000.
- Streets named for the Mitze familyThe Mitze family once owned the property that became Sherrelwood Estates, south of West 84th Avenue near Pecos Street. When the neighborhood was laid out, four of its streets were named for family members: Ralph Lane, Louise Drive, Charles Way and Charolette Way.
