About Shaw Heights, Colorado

Shaw Heights is an unincorporated community of 5,185 people in Adams County, Colorado, and its mail comes through the Westminster post office. In the early 1900s the ground near the present community was Mattison Orchards, a prosperous cherry orchard that people then counted as the biggest in the world.

Roy D. Barnes later built a ranch on that land and called it the Lucky Day Track. Its first racing day came on the first weekend of June 1945, and with it quarter-horse racing arrived in Colorado for the first time.

  • Sold to Ray Shaw in 1954In 1954 Barnes sold the land to a buyer, Ray Shaw, who was joined in the deal by Arthur and Erwin Hayutin, the two lawyers working for him. The new owners cleared the property and tore out the old race track. On part of it they built a housing project, close to where Shaw Heights stands today.
  • Saint Martha's mission, 1955On June 19, 1955, twenty-four Episcopalians living at Shaw Heights met for the first time to plan church services. Their effort took hold quickly: in August 1955 Bishop Minnis recognized the group as an organized mission and gave it the name Saint Martha.
  • 5,185 people on 449 acresThe 2020 census counted 5,185 people in the Shaw Heights census-designated place, which covers 449 acres. Adams County governs the community, and its students attend Westminster Public Schools, including Shaw Heights Middle School.
