About Welby, Colorado

Welby is an unincorporated community of 15,553 people in Adams County, part of the Denver metropolitan area. It was named for General Welby, a railroad official. Its farmers watered their fields from Clear Creek, and their rights to that water went back to the Lower Clear Creek Ditch, dug in 1861, and the Agricultural Ditch, from 1866.

Those strong water rights, along with good soil and a big market in nearby Denver, slowly turned a farming community into a place of intensive truck gardens. Americans, Scandinavians, Germans and a few Japanese settled here, but Italians became the largest group. The Rende, Mauro and DeRose families were among the first Italians to make Welby their home.

  • School in a claim shantyWelby parents wanted a school, so they gathered a petition that listed everyone from babies in the cradle to young married women. In 1873 that petition created District No. 16, today District No. 1, and classes met in an abandoned claim shanty about twelve feet square. By 1893 there were too many pupils for it, and the four-room Cline School went up. Cline School served Welby until it closed by September 1955.
  • Pascal celery in 1902Samuel, Salvatore and Tony Spano are the first known growers of Pascal celery anywhere around Denver. Nobody knows exactly when the brothers arrived near Welby, but they began selling their celery at market in 1902.
  • The Rotello store, about 1909Two railroads, the U. P. and the D. L. & N. W., built their lines across the valley. Not long after, about 1909, Mr. and Mrs. D. Rotello opened a general store at Welby.
