About Derby, Colorado

Derby is a community of 8,407 people in Adams County, part of the Denver metropolitan area. It most likely takes its name from the English town of Derby, and its post office opened in 1910. A year later, the state business directory listed Derby as a small but growing town of about 30 people.

Derby never incorporated as a city, so Adams County still governs it today. Its children attend schools in Adams County School District 14, whose comprehensive high school is Adams City High School.

  • The Irwins' store in 1911In 1911 one family ran much of the town's daily business. Mrs. C. J. Irwin handled the mail as postmaster, while C. J. and E. P. Irwin kept the general store. R. L. Berger served as Derby's station agent for the C. B. & Q. railway.
  • Post office, 1910 to 1963Derby's post office opened on January 27, 1910, and it stayed open until January 31, 1963. After it closed, mail for the area went through the Commerce City post office, ZIP code 80022, which still serves Derby.
