About Bethany, Illinois
Bethany is a village in Moultrie County, with 1,255 residents recorded in the 2020 census. Illinois Route 121 follows its northern and eastern edges, linking the community with Sullivan and Decatur. Its name recalls a log church erected on the village site in 1838.
- From Church to VillageA Bethany church built from hewn logs in 1838 stood on the later village site and gave the community its name.
- Railroad EraAn early state encyclopedia placed Bethany on the Peoria, Decatur & Evansville Railroad, amid a farming district with a local newspaper.
- Population GrowthThe encyclopedia recorded 269 residents in 1880, 688 in 1890, and 873 in 1900.
- Village WatersMarrowbone Creek passes through Bethany's western and southern areas toward the West Okaw River in the Kaskaskia River watershed.
- Shared School DistrictOkaw Valley Community Unit School District 302 formed in 2001 by consolidating the Bethany and Findlay school districts.
