About Lake City, Illinois
Lake City is an unincorporated community of 69 people in northwestern Moultrie County, set along Illinois Route 32. Sullivan, the county seat, lies 15 miles away by that highway, and Decatur is 16 miles to the northwest. The town began with the railroad: in 1873 local landowners gave ground to the railroad company, and that spring it was divided into the lots and blocks of a new town.
- Named for James C. LakeJames C. Lake gave the railroad company twenty acres in section 12, and the new town took his name. W. C. Foley added ten acres in section 13 and W. L. Foley another ten in section 14, and in the spring of 1873 all of that land was surveyed into lots and blocks.
- Waters bound for the KaskaskiaLake City drains to the Stringtown Branch, a stream that runs southeast to the West Okaw River and from there into the Kaskaskia River watershed.
- 69 people in 2020The 2020 census counted 69 people in the Lake City census-designated place, which covers 0.39 square miles, every bit of it land.
