About Bethel Manor, Virginia
Bethel Manor is a census-designated place in York County, Virginia, and the 2020 census counted 4,540 people living there. Its homes house military families from Joint Base Langley-Eustis, giving Langley families a place to live off the base. Those homes stand on Civil War ground, because Union troops fought the Battle of Big Bethel here on June 10, 1861.
- Major Winthrop's last chargeMajor Theodore Winthrop wrote the Union plan of attack for the Battle of Big Bethel. In the middle of the fight he jumped up on a log, waved his sword and called out to his men that one more charge would win the day, but enemy fire struck him down before they could follow. Bethel Manor now covers the ground where he died.
- 76 Union casualtiesFederal forces counted 76 casualties at Big Bethel, and 18 of those men were lost, Winthrop among them. Because the fighting came so early in 1861, many historians see the battle as the first planned land fight of the Civil War.
