About Big Bend, California
Big Bend takes its name from a sharp turn in the Pit River. Settlers called the place Elena in 1890, then Henderson in 1906, and Big Bend by 1922. In the late 1930s, building the Pit Five powerhouse brought some 2,000 hard-rock miners to town.
For thousands of years, Big Bend was the heart of Madesi land. The Madesi were one of nine Pit River bands who spoke the Achomawi language. Their main village, Mah-dess', stood on the north bank across from the hot springs.
