About McCloud, California
McCloud carries the name of Alexander Roderick McLeod, a Scot, in a changed spelling. In 1827 he led the first band of Hudson's Bay Company trappers into northern California. Severe weather forced the men to cache their furs and traps. They narrowly escaped starvation and death and headed for a warmer climate.
In 1913 the McCloud River Lumber Company owned the whole town and ran its mills. Not one home or building there was privately owned. Workers with families paid rent to the company and bought all their supplies at its stores.
