About Weed, California

Weed is a city of 2,862 people in Siskiyou County, about 10 miles northwest of Mount Shasta. It takes its name from Abner Weed, a pioneer lumberman who learned that the strong winds here were good for drying lumber. In 1897 he paid $400 for 280 acres and the Siskiyou Lumber and Mercantile Mill, on ground that is now the city.

The town grew up around his Weed Lumber Company, and lumber carried its economy from 1901 until as late as the 1980s. Mills here turned out plywood, wooden doors and treated wood for companies such as Roseburg Forest Products, Morgan Products and J.H. Baxter. As logging faded, visitors heading for Mount Shasta, the rivers and the ski slopes became a larger part of how the town makes its living.

  • The Shasta InnAbner Weed's Weed Lumber Company built the Shasta Inn and its company boarding house. The lumber business it served became the core of the town that formed around it and took his name. The complex joined the National Register in 1980.
  • The Boles Fire of 2014On September 15, 2014, around 1:30 p.m., flames broke out in the middle of town, behind the Boles Creek Apartments. Winds of 40 mph drove the fire across more than 200 acres in four hours. Evacuees had to move from one shelter to the next as the flames came close to College of the Siskiyous. The fire damaged or destroyed more than 200 structures, two of them churches, and 7,678 Pacific Power customers lost electricity.
  • Keeping Beaughan SpringWeed pipes its water straight to homes from Beaughan Spring. According to a 2016 story in The New York Times, Pierre Papillaud, a French billionaire, wanted the city to give up the spring so his bottled water company could sell more of it, which would have left Weed without public water. The two sides reached a compromise in 2021 that lets the city draw from the spring in perpetuity.
  • Where Of Mice and Men beginsJohn Steinbeck opened Of Mice and Men with George and Lennie on the run from a farm job in Weed, where Lennie had gotten into trouble.
