About Gazelle, California

Gazelle began as Edson's, a station on the stage line through Shasta Valley. A man named Brady took up the place. E. B. and J. R. Edson bought it in 1853 and built up a fine farm. A post office named Gazelle opened there on April 15, 1870, with E. B. Edson as postmaster.

Pronghorn antelope were once common in Shasta Valley. They were most plentiful in the region between Little Shasta and Gazelle. Mr. Masgrave was one of the first settlers in Little Shasta Valley. He once saw a herd of at least two thousand animals west of Gazelle.

  • The town's mining daysThe Dewey mine at Gazelle kept its 10-stamp mill running steadily. Thirty-two men were doing development work at the mine.
