About Lake Shastina, California
Lake Shastina is a community of 2,401 people in Siskiyou County, about 9 miles north of Weed. Its homes stand on the east side of a reservoir on the Shasta River, and the town shares the lake's name.
When pioneers first settled the Shasta Valley, they found the land dry and scorched. That began to change after Dr. Dwinnell, a young doctor, came from Chicago in 1891 and pictured a large lake in the valley. The Nevada Contracting Company started building Dwinnell Dam in 1926, and in 1968 the land beside the finished lake opened as a recreation area for second homes.
- The reservoir that leakedThe dam itself was sound, but faults and crevices in the ground let the water drain away before the new ditch system could fill. People dropped hay bales into the cracks, moved earth over the larger ones and even poured cement into big holes. In the end silt and small debris worked their way into the cracks, and the lake sealed itself.
- 50,000 acre feet by 1955Once the reservoir held water, the irrigation district was allowed to store more of it. Its old storage limit of 35,000 acre feet climbed to 50,000 by 1955, which put Dr. Dwinnell's lake to work in the once dry valley.
- From weekend homes to a townThe second-home recreation area of 1968 did not stay a getaway. Over the years retirees and families settled here for good, and Lake Shastina now runs its own fire and police services.
