About Muse, Pennsylvania

Muse is a community of 2,525 people in Cecil Township, Washington County, just north of Canonsburg. It began in the early 1920s as a company coal town, raised from nothing on land that had been the Weaver, Hall and White farms. U.S. Steel built it through a company it owned, the National Mining Company, and from 1921 to 1926 that company put up three hundred two-story houses, mostly duplexes with a few single homes.

The National Number 3 mine at Muse started up in 1922, equipped with the newest technology of its day. It kept running for more than three decades, and about 500 men still worked there when it shut down in 1954.

  • Named for Charles A. MuseThe village took the name of Charles A. Muse, who was in charge of coal shipments at the H.C. Frick Coke Company when the town went up.
  • Porches front and backEach of the company's two-story houses came with a front porch, a back porch and a yard closed in by a neat fence.
  • Ball games at the centerA large baseball field sat right in the center of Muse, and the coal company kept it in good shape. Summer baseball games were the biggest event in town, and in the fall the same field went to soccer.
