About Cecil-Bishop, Pennsylvania
Cecil-Bishop is a census-designated place of 2,730 people in Washington County, at the geographic center of Cecil Township. It takes in two unincorporated communities, Cecil and Bishop, which line Pennsylvania Route 50. Bishop started out in 1892 as a coal-mining town, and the area has since grown into a suburb of Pittsburgh.
- A rail branch in 1892Bishop's history begins in 1892, when the P., C., C. & St. L. railroad ran a branch out from Cecil. The town then grew up around the mines of the Pittsburg Coal Company, and it was served by both the Wabash and the Miller's Branch railroads.
- A mining town of 25 housesBishop's early buildings were 25 houses for the miners, a Federal supply store and a butcher shop. About 100 people lived in the town in 1900.
- From farms to neighborhoodsSince the 1990s, much of the farmland around Cecil and Bishop has been built up into planned neighborhoods. The growth came from the nearby Southpointe business park and from Cecil Township's rise as a suburb of Pittsburgh.
