About Blasdell, New York
Blasdell is a village of 2,539 people in Erie County, at the north end of the town of Hamburg, with the city of Lackawanna on its northern edge. The community began as a railroad town, built up around the Erie and Nickel Plate lines.
Its post office opened in 1885, giving the settlement a mail address of its own. In 1898 Blasdell incorporated as a village, and today it goes by the nickname "Gateway to the Southtowns," a title it uses for its place in Erie County.
- Named for a station masterThe village takes its name from Herman Blasdell, who served as the first station master at the Erie and Pennsylvania railroad depot. The town grew up around that depot.
- Steel from 1907Heavy industry kept Blasdell working for much of the 20th century. The Seneca Iron and Steel Company started up in 1907 and in time became Bethlehem Steel. The Ford Motor Company also ran a stamping plant here.
- A wrestler's restaurant, 1965Professional wrestler Ilio DiPaolo made Blasdell his home for many years. In 1965 he started an Italian restaurant along South Park Avenue. He died in 1995, and his family still runs the restaurant.
