About Bloomfield Hills, Michigan
Bloomfield Hills is a city of 4,460 people in Oakland County, about twenty miles northwest of downtown Detroit along the Woodward Corridor. On June 28, 1820, Oakland County was split into two townships, Pontiac and Bloomfield, and this land fell in Bloomfield Township. It stayed farm country for decades, until people from the city began buying estates here in the early 1890s because they wanted privacy and quiet.
By the turn of the 20th century, wealthy Detroit families had bought up much of the farmland, and the district took the name Bloomfield Hills. It incorporated as a village in 1927. Birmingham was growing next door, so in 1929 residents voted to make Bloomfield Hills a city, which kept it from being absorbed by its larger neighbor.
“the effect of Cranbrook and its graduates and faculty on the physical environment of this country has been profound ... Cranbrook, surely more than any other institution, has a right to think of itself as synonymous with contemporary American design.”
- George Booth's CranbrookGeorge Booth planned the Cranbrook Educational Community here, and Christ Church Cranbrook, an Episcopal church, was consecrated in 1928 as part of that plan. In 1932 the Booths founded the Cranbrook Academy of Art, which grew into one of the country's leading graduate schools of architecture, art and design. Cranbrook is a National Historic Landmark, and Cranbrook House joined the National Register in 1973.
- A church for two lost sonsTheodore F. MacManus and his wife paid for St. Hugo of the Hills Roman Catholic Church in memory of their children Hugo and Hubert, who had died. Arthur DesRossiers designed it, Bishop Michael J. Gallagher approved it, and it was built between 1931 and 1936. St. Hugo of the Hills Catholic School followed in 1940.
- A Birmingham church moves northThe Congregational Church of Birmingham started out in the city it is named for. In 1966 it moved north into Bloomfield Hills, to a new building where Cranbrook Road meets Woodward Avenue, with the street address 1000 Cranbrook Road.
- Japanese classes at CranbrookWhen the Japanese School of Detroit formed in 1973 to teach children on weekends, it held its first classes at Cranbrook School Brookside.
