About Bloomfield, Montana
Bloomfield is a small unincorporated settlement in Dawson County, where the 2020 census counted 6 residents. It lies 23 miles northeast of Glendive, the county seat, and of the Yellowstone River that flows past that city.
The settlement was first known as Adams. In 1905 two brothers from Nebraska, J. Berton and Dave Crockett, took up homesteads nearby, and more families from their hometown soon came west to join them. Two years later, in 1907, the residents gave the town a new name, Bloomfield, after the Nebraska town that so many of them had left behind.
- Renamed in 1907The town began as Adams. In 1907 the people living here voted to call it Bloomfield instead, honoring Bloomfield, Nebraska, the town the Crockett brothers and their neighbors had come from.
- Nebraska homesteadersJ. Berton and Dave Crockett claimed homesteads near here in 1905. Other families from Bloomfield, Nebraska, followed the brothers to this part of eastern Montana, and together they gave the place its lasting name.
- Once an Amish communityEarlier in its history the town was part of an Amish community. Bloomfield still keeps a post office of its own, with ZIP code 59315.
