About Bluetown, Texas
Bluetown is a community of 491 people in Cameron County, at the southern tip of Texas, where the Rio Grande marks the border with Mexico. It began in the early 1940s as a place where nearby growers brought citrus fruit and other crops to sell.
By 1945 the young market town had three stores and seventy-five residents. Five years later about 100 people lived there, and the town had a few houses, a church and a cemetery.
- A colonia from the 1960sDuring the 1960s a colonia grew up in the area, and it came to share the Bluetown name. By 1976 it held eighty dwellings and an estimated 396 people. Ten years later, in 1986, it had grown to ninety-one homes and about 410 residents.
- On the Rio GrandeBluetown lies in southwestern Cameron County, with Iglesia Antigua on its west side and the Rio Grande along its south side. U.S. Route 281 runs through the community, connecting it to Brownsville, 26 miles to the southeast, while La Feria sits 6 miles to the north.
